Newsletter | October 2015

Newsletters,
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Green Button Alliance's newsletter!  We look forward to providing you with timely Alliance updates and member news, Green Button standards developments, industry progress, and information on upcoming events and member activities. It's an exciting time for Green Button energy data standards as more leading utilities and energy service providers nationally and internationally commit to offering their customers standardized access to their energy information.
Green Button Alliance members are driving innovation in the energy industry, and have enabled the first Green Button implementation to be fully deployed using the Google Cloud, the first large-scale Green Button deployment for federal commercial buildings, and the first statewide availability of Green Button data--giving access to millions of Californians. Our members are also using Green Button data in powerful SaaS platforms and in feature-rich mobile and solar applications, and more applications are in development. Customers are now looking forward to engaging with their energy companies and Green Button application providers to better-manage their energy use.
In addition to electric energy, the flexible Green Button standard also supports other energy data such as natural gas and water. Recently, the Center for Data Innovation published a compelling report urging water utilities to leverage Green Button data to provide consumers with access to their water usage data to enable them to better-manage and conserve their water use. We are also beginning to envision the evolution of the standard to complement other standards such as real estate listing services--imagine being able to leverage Green Button data in the real estate sales and rental market.
As an Alliance, we want to move Green Button standards and implementations forward. As a member of the Green Button Alliance you can: gain access to other members, participate in marketing initiatives, shape the future of the standard, get included technical assistance, and can reach more customers for your Green Button solution. If you're not already a member, we welcome you to join the nonprofit Green Button Alliance to help drive the markets forward.

Chai Energy launched it's mobile app that shows customers their energy use in real-time, includes a new Demand Response (DR) feature that notifies users of a DR event in their area, provides customized energy-saving tips, and estimates how much users will save on their bill and receive in DR incentives--it can even tell if solar energy is an option for them! Chai Energy's mobile app is now available in SCE, SDG&E and PG&E service territories.

Energyworx offers a big-data aggregation and analytics cloud-software service for the energy and utilities  industry. I t's powerful platform which supports open standards including Green Button, was stress tested on the Google Cloud Platform, and was proven  to scale to handle millions of meters and billions of values!  Register now to attend Energyworx' Webinar on Sept. 30th: "Enabling the Energy Evolution, Changing the Way the Energy Sector Understands Data Through Real Time Insights".
In August, Alliance founding member  London Hydro  formalized it's
partnership  with MaRS Advanced Energy Centre (AEC)--one of the newest members of GBA--to help advance the Green Button platform with utilities and customers.
UtilityAPI, a winner of DOE's SunShot Catalyst Demo Day, is a software service provider that downloads bill and interval data for solar and energy efficiency companies, and also offers a secure hosting service for utilities. UtilityAPI's hosted service provides compatibility with various Green Button utility interface implementations and it is currently available at PG&E and SDG&E.
Tech Corner |
Green Button DMD Certifications:  The GBA is now accepting applications for certification of Green Button Download My Data (DMD) implementations.  If you are developing, or have already implemented, a DMD solution, you can apply for certification here
Testing your DMD files takes only a few minutes and a "Green Button Certified DMD" logo on your DMD page assures customers and app developers that your solution provides consistent Green Button data and will interoperate with other certified Green Button products and services.  Your DMD solution will also be listed on the GBA's Green Button Certified Solutions page on our forthcoming new website.
Want to help shape the future of the standard?  The Green Button standard is currently being enhanced and the GBA is on the forefront of the development. Please feel free to participate in our working group calls:
Weekly OpenADE Meetings:  Open Automated Data Exchange (ADE) meetings are currently focused on defining specific implementation details of the Green Button Connect My Data (CMD) standard.  Meetings take place every Tuesday from 3-4pm ET.
Monthly EnergyOS OpenESPI Meetings:  Meetings take place the first Monday of each month at 12-1pm ET. Meeting details for both working groups can be found here
For app developers looking for a great overview on how to leverage Green Button data for energy consumption apps, see ProgrammableWeb's excellent  new article .
Events & Activities |
GBA's  executive director Barry Haaser, and founding members'  SDG&E's Kim Cresencia and SCE's Natalie Martinez presented U.S. Green Button initiative and implementation updates to the Ontario Green Button community during the  Green Button Community Call #2  held on Aug. 27th, and hosted by MaRS Discovery District. MaRS' Caroline Bordeaux presented an update of GBA's founding member London Hydro's CMD pilot and new apps. She also noted a new working group is actively discussing the addition of natural gas and water data to Green Button implementations to enable more integrated utility management solutions for consumers. If you missed the call, you can access the presentation here.  The next Green Button Community Call will be held Nov. 19th, at 3pm ET.  Register here  to be notified of the call details/agenda.
Barry Haaser also recently gave an excellent overview of the GSA's pilot project that leverages Pepco's and Schneider Electric's Green Button implementation for 400 commercial buildings at the DOE's Energy Efficiency Exchange, which was held Aug. 8-11th, in Phoenix. See the benefits that open Green Button data are enabling for the federal government here.
