Enbridge Gas: Advancing Customer Empowerment Through Green Button Data Access
Enbridge Gas Inc (EGI), a subsidiary of Enbridge Inc. (ENB), is a Canadian leader in energy transportation and distribution. Within its Gas Distribution and Storage business unit, Enbridge Gas includes five North American natural gas utilities that deliver safe, affordable, and reliable energy to approximately 7.1 million customers across Ontario, Ohio, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, North Carolina, and Quebec. As a member and Board participant of the Green Button Alliance (GBA), Enbridge Gas supports open standards and secure, customer-authorized data access to help customers and solution providers make better use of energy information.
Enbridge Gas continues to invest in digital capabilities that strengthen customer engagement and enable energy-efficiency outcomes. Standardized access to customer energy data can support conservation, help identify savings opportunities, and facilitate participation in emerging energy services—while maintaining appropriate privacy and security controls.
A key component of this work is Enbridge Gas’ Green Button Connect My Data (CMD) implementation. Using the Green Button standard, customers can securely authorize trusted third-party providers (3Ps) to access natural gas usage and billing data. This permission-based approach promotes interoperability across the ecosystem while reinforcing transparency, privacy, and security.
Enbridge Gas’ Green Button Certified platform supports both Green Button Download My Data (for personal use) and Green Button Connect My Data, which it calls Share My Data. Since launching Share My Data, Enbridge Gas has onboarded more than 25 Green Button enabled third-party providers, with additional providers in progress. Thousands of customer-authorized downloads and shares occur each month, and third-party providers continue to enroll new customers—signaling strong adoption and continued market interest in standardized energy data access.
