About the Green Button Alliance

The Green Button Alliance (GBA) is a non-profit organization that works to advance the development of Green Button™ energy data standards, support the delivery of utility-provided standards-based data exchange implementations, and promote interoperable Green Button solutions that empower energy users to digitally access their own energy usage data, manage energy consumption, and save resources.

Following a White House call-to-action to provide utility and energy service provider customers with easy and secure access to their energy-usage information in a standardized format, the Green Button initiative was created.

In response to requests from the White House, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Green Button Alliance was formed to accelerate development of standardized Green Button implementations and adoption of those implementations.

Today, the Green Button Alliance works to educate the energy and water industry—and users around the world—about the benefits of Green Button technology, promote the innovative use of energy information in a wide-variety of applications, and is the industry’s only source for testing and Certification of Green Button implementations.  The Green Button Alliance assures quality control and Green Button data consistency through testing, Certification, and branding.
